Stephen Helfenbein
Alpine DECL, National Team MemberBiography
How did you get your start in this career field? I began teaching skiing while I was in college in order to maintain access to skiing.
What inspired you to pursue the career you have today? I read an article about the former PSIA National Team member Scott Mathers. It portrayed a a super high caliber, versatile style of skiing which was the same thing to which I was aspiring. Once I realized you could make a career pursuing this goal, I was all in!
What’s something you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t yet? Guitar lessons.
What surprised you most about working in this industry? How long I would stay in it. I had no idea I would be in this industry for 30+ years.
What lesson are you most grateful for learning? Never get complacent. Assessing the weather, the terrain, your students, yourself. Never get stuck or seduced by a pattern. Something is always changing.
Please list your hidden talent(s): I haven’t found them yet. They are really well hidden.
