Stew Marsh first experienced the thrill of skiing at 13 years old at Labrador Mountain in Central New York. During his college years, he learned to race and ski jump and was named captain of the ski team. He also began his ski teaching career at this time. Stew worked year-round at Labrador Mountain and became Assistant Ski School Director in 1970.
Stew was certified by PSIA-East in 1971 and was GLM certified by Cliff Taylor. He moved to Utah in 1974 and began teaching at Alta’s Alf Engen Ski School. He held this position for 30 years, developing many lifelong friendships.
Desiring to increase his involvement in PSIA-Intermountain, Stew became a clinic leader and examiner and in 1979 was elected to the Intermountain Board of Directors. During his 27-year tenure on the board, he served in many positions. As Communications VP, he created the Edge newsletter to open lines of communication with membership. As President, he revised the member database. After three years as President, he served six years as the Intermountain representative to PSIA-AASI. He again served as Intermountain President for two additional years, and left the board in 2005.
Stew had the opportunity to fulfill a lifetime goal of becoming a Ski School Director and accepted the job of Snowsports Manager at Snowbasin. During his nine year tenure he developed and implemented the “Learn to Earn” program. This program was recognized by NSAA as an innovative way to increase and retain the number of skiers and boarders as was successfully used by Snowbasin.
Stew retired from Snowbasin in 2016. He continues to enjoy Masters racing and conducting clinics and exams for the Intermountain Division.
Stew was awarded lifetime membership to PSIA-AASI and PSIA-I, and in 2019, he was inducted into the PSIA-I Ski Instructors Hall of Fame and continues to remain true to his passion.
