February 2019

RUN FOR THE BOARD!

Applications to run for the Board of Directors this year are due on February 15, 2019. Here is some information about the Board and about the election process to help you decide if you would like to run for a seat.

What do they do?
The Intermountain Division Board of Directors consists of PSIA/AASI members who volunteer their time and expertise to the board. They are responsible for the strategic management of our nonprofit corporation. Board members represent the PSIA/AASI membership. They represent their ski schools and the Intermountain Division. The board operates following our Policies and Procedures along with our By-Laws.

What should members want and need from their Directors?
We all want a board member who has passion for the organization, a willingness to volunteer their time, and the desire to be a leader. A board member should have a team-oriented attitude. The board member works to speak with one voice for the entire board.

What does the board do?
The board meets three times a year (summer, fall and spring) in the vicinity of Salt Lake City. Beginning with the summer meeting, there is a strategic planning session that reviews membership data such as event and exam data, and financials of the organization. This is a fact-based assessment of our financial stability and a review of the membership's needs. The board also reviews and revises policies as needed. The board is also fun! We plan the Spring Clinic, discuss new ideas for education, work with the National organization, and learn how our organization that we belong to runs!

So, you want to run for a BOD position! Great! Here is the process:
- Applicants must be certified Level 1, 2, or 3 members, in good standing, of the Intermountain Division.
- Applicants must be endorsed, in writing, by five certified members in good standing in the division.
- Applications are to be received in the office via email at admin@psia-i.org or postmarked by February 15.
- Applicants must submit a photograph no smaller than 2" x 2".
- Applicants must submit a short biographical paragraph, which includes your certification education, past/present employment, years of membership, and why you want to be on the board. This will be published so that members can know you better and vote.
- If running for a regional position, you must be employed by one of the snowsports schools identified in that region.
- Voting for regional candidates will be by Intermountain Division PSIA-AASI members in good standing in that region.
- Voting for at large candidates will be by eligible voters within the full Intermountain Division membership.

Brian Head: Training at the Forefront

Brian Head has initiated a new focus on instructor training this season, offering free PSIA clinics for their snowsports instructors. School Director Pierre-Jean Beney says, "We hire based on the why of skiing, not on the how." That means that someone with the right people skills can learn to be a great teacher and rider. So he starts with great people and trains for technique. At Brian Head, providing free training not only improves the quality of teaching, it also improves retention because instructors know that their skills are valued. Another payoff: first time and repeat lessons have increased.

Showcasing Snowsports

FIS World Championships
It's not too late to see FIS action at Solitude, Deer Valley and Park City. The event schedule is here. Be sure to check out the fireworks at the Canyons Village on February 5, and the closing ceremonies on Main Street, Park City on February 10.

World Cup Biathlon
Hard on the heels of the FIS World Championships is a World Cup Biathlon event at Soldier Hollow. It's the first time they've held a biathlon world cup since the test event for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. 29 nations and 200 athletes will be there, and you can be too. More information can be found here.

The Education Scholarship Fund Needs You

Each year at Spring Clinic, we hold a silent auction to raise money for Education Scholarships. This year, with Spring Clinic at Sun Valley, we need extra help in acquiring donations to include in the auction. If you have any connections for gear or services, or you would like to donate something yourself, please contact the office. Help us to help your fellow instructors work toward certification!

Need a Jacket?

The office has a number of jackets for sale that were lightly used by the Snowboard clinicians. Men's puffies & shells and women's jackets are available for $25.
